Respite care is needed to provide refreshing energizing breaks that will increase the family’s ability to carry out home care while decreasing the emotional costs to its members. It is also needed to maintain optimism, to avoid burnout that may precipitate neglect, child abuse, family disruptions, and out of home placement.
Research has shown that families with children who present with physical, emotional, and behavioral challenges are often overwhelmed with stress and the need for support can be intensified. Services taken for granted by other parents are difficult to obtain or are no longer available. Finding baby-sitters able to deal with the child’s special needs can be very difficult. Even relatives or close friends may be unable or unwilling to care for the child.
Al-Hajj, Inc.’s respite care services include:
In-Home Care: In-home care is provided by a family support team which is exceptionally trained for a variety of tasks in the home. Family support workers are specifically trained to provide care for children with physical, behavioral and emotional challenges. Family support team workers are trained to provide parenting techniques in the home and to increase the parents’ level of functioning. Services are also available on an emergency, 24-hours basis, seven days per week.
Out-of-Home Care: These services are provided in a variety of settings, by Al-Hajj, Inc.’s licensed foster family homes. Out-of-home care can be provided for a few hours a day or for a weekend. Older children, children with particular needs or families facing an emergency may benefit most from out-of-home respite care services.
Emergency Respite Care: This service is designed for families whose children are at risk of abuse or neglect, or who are facing crisis situations causing them to temporarily become unable to care for their children.
