Cost of Raising a Child
Based on USDA data for 2005, middle-income families earning between $40,700 and $68,400 can expect to spend $9,510 to $10,560 annually to raise a child through high school. This translates into an average daily cost of $25 to $29 per day per child. In Alabama, (per the North America Council on Adoptable Children – www.nacac.org – updated 02/05/05) the average state rate paid to a traditional foster family is $14 per day per child. The average state rate paid to therapeutic foster parents of teens is $38 per day per child. Children in therapeutic foster care are special needs children with very challenging mental health and behavioral issues. State funding alone will maintain a child below poverty.
